LASIK Can Be Safer Than Contacts
A recent study in the prestigious Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery reports That LASIK for people with nearsightedness with or without astigmatism is safer over time than soft contact lenses. This study was based on the results of 32,000 LASIK surgeries reported by the U.S. Army performed during 2000 and 2003. It should be noted that this predated recent technological advances in LASIK that include such things as wavefront guided customized laser vision correction, alignment with iris registration, and LASIK flap creation with a laser instead of with a bladed instrument. In the years since 2003 LASIK has become more accurate, with improved night vision quality, less dry eye, and a significant decrease in previously reported complications associated with the older bladed LASIK instrument. Yet according to the careful statistical evaluation reported in this article even prior to these developments LASIK was safer than soft contact lens use.
We find that the two main reasons people still opt for contacts over LASIK is fear and cost. As for cost, we know that LASIK over time is significantly less costly than contacts. As for fear, all contact lens wearers should be aware that sight threatening infections from contact lenses do unfortuanately occur and that for many patients LASIK is a safer alternative.
